Tricks that work

How to learn the 9 times table

Ten groups take away one

9 × 6 = 10 × 6 (60) − 6 = 54.

Digits make 9

From 9 × 2 to 9 × 10 the digits always add to 9: 18, 27, 36, 45 …

Finger trick

Hold up ten fingers and fold down finger number 4. Three fingers before it, six after: 36.

One less

In 9 × 7 the tens digit is one less than 7, so 6. Then 6 + 3 = 9, so the answer is 63.

Pattern to spot: the last digits of 9 × 1 to 9 × 10 go 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0
