Tricks that work

How to learn the 7 times table

Fives and twos

7 = 5 + 2, so 7 × 6 = 5 × 6 (30) + 2 × 6 (12) = 42.

Turn it round

7 × 3 is 3 × 7. Once the other tables are known, only a few 7s facts are really new.

Anchor on 49

Learn 7 × 7 = 49 by heart, then step one seven down (42) or one seven up (56).

Count to 56

5, 6, 7, 8: 56 = 7 × 8. The digits count up in order.

Pattern to spot: the last digits of 7 × 1 to 7 × 10 go 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0
